YWCA Olympia is pleased to announce their 2018 Business of Achievement: Department of Commerce Office of Homeless Youth Prevention & Protection. This office within the department is a public agency leading the pack, focused on intersectionality and social justice. The department is committed to raising awareness and supports to end youth and young adult homelessness. The office does not attempt to estimate or guess what youth and young adults need to be their best selves, they utilize youth voice by getting to know the individuals they serve, meeting them where they are at, and collaborating with other organizations such as The Mockingbird Society and Youth Advocates Ending Homelessness. They are committed to improvement, knowing there is more work to do and interested in continuing their services. But they are also willingly evolving, acknowledging that youth of color have been disproportionately represented in the homeless system and starting conversations and necessary work to assure their solutions and resources are equitable and meet the needs of youth of color. While others may be afraid to act, they are working as an influencer, tapping into resources to assure a social justice focus and that youth’s needs are met.
When is the event? The Annual Womxn* of Achievement Celebration, which will honor the Business of Achievement, will take place on Saturday, November 10th at South Puget Sound Community College.
What is the event? Established in 1994, the YWCA Olympia Womxn* of Achievement Award is one of the most prestigious honors for womxn and businesses in the South Sound and seeks to center and recognize the accomplishments, professional contributions, and public service performed by womxn in the community. The Business category was added in 2014. The Womxn and Business of Achievement award recognizes those who embody outstanding leadership qualities, are exceptionally committed to their community and/or profession, and live or work in the greater South Sound area. The Honorees are working to eliminate racism and sexism to empower womxn, have advanced the political, social and/or economic status of womxn and girls, and embody the YWCA’s vision of a world where all people are valued, live free from oppression, and thrive in a just society.
How much are tickets and where can I get them? Tickets are $65 per person ($50 for seniors/military and $30 student). Doors open for the main event at 5:30pm with a social hour. Tickets information is available online at www.ywcaofolympia.org, under Events (2018 Womxn of Achievement). All proceeds benefit YWCA Olympia.
