Annual event honors those making a difference!
(OLYMPIA, Wash.) – Empowering their community. Supporting women. Leading change. Standing up. The YWCA of Olympia is pleased to announce their 2016 Business of Achievement: South Puget Sound Habitat for Humanity.
With equality, fairness and family at the heart of their work, South Puget Sound Habitat for Humanity strives to walk the walk: “The best part of being a member of this team is that, not only, can I bring my infant daughter to work with me but I also have 110% support at the job as I navigate a whole new world of being a mother and a full time professional” Shawna Dutton, Development Manager. “And, a good work environment lets us focus on the mission, which is large.”
Over fifty percent of single moms with children under five in Thurston County live in poverty. Not coincidentally, fifty-two percent of our homeowners are single mothers. Habitat’s answer to poverty, especially intergenerational poverty is to build a home you can own. These families that they serve, excluded by traditional lending markets, are only an affordable home away from stability, better family health, better childhood educational outcomes and the equity creation that comes with homeownership.
