Former WA State Governor Gary Locke will interview Merritt Long, author of ‘My View From the Back of the Bus’, as part of South Puget Sound Community College’s (SPSCC) Artist & Lecture Series on Thursday, May 13, 2021 at 5:30 p.m. As part of their conversation, Long will share stories from his early life in the South and his professional life in the Pacific Northwest. Long will also reflect on the importance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), as well as touch on how talking about current events surrounding George Floyd, Black Lives Matter, and Anti-Asian incidents, can help bridge the racial divide.
In addition to being an author, Long headed up four Washington state agencies and started the Learning Seed Foundation with his wife Marsha Tadano Long. The Learning Seed Foundation funds college scholarships, mostly people of color in Thurston and Pierce counties, who show promise and want to serve their communities but face financial challenges.
The Artist & Lecture Series brings nationally and internationally recognized artists and speakers who offer diverse and innovative views and performances to the campus and local community, giving audience members the chance to broaden their cultural experience.
