Staff Sergeant Micah L. Murdock, a member of the U.S. Army for more than eight years, has been chosen by Saint Martin’s University as its ninth recipient of the America’s Service Heroes Scholarship. The award was announced Nov. 4 at the University’s Gala International 2017, a major fundraising event for University student scholarships.
The America’s Service Heroes Scholarship was created in partnership with America’s Credit Union to provide financial assistance to service members and their families who have sacrificed for our nation’s well-being and security, says Kathleen Boyle, Ph.D., dean of the College of Education & Counseling Psychology and Saint Martin’s University – JBLM. “The ability to provide financial support to the defenders of our nation pursuing their higher education goals through voluntary military education was the foremost wish of the scholarship’s founders and supporters,” she said. “They knew of no better way of saluting all of America’s Service Heroes serving around the globe.”
SSG Murdock grew up in an Army family living at various Army bases around the country, but he calls the state of Utah home. Growing up in an Army family, he knew he would serve his country and joined the Army, just like his parents had before him.
He enlisted in the Army in August of 2009, and has been assigned to many locales both in the US and overseas. In Iraq he served on the Brigade Staff, and his exceptional demeanor and mission support led to a battlefield promotion to the rank of sergeant. In 2016, he received orders to Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, Group Support Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), Joint Base Lewis McChord. SSG Murdock is also working towards acceptance into the Reserve Officer Training Corps with a life-long dream of becoming an Army officer. The America’s Service Hero Scholarship will help him achieve this dream.
He received his Associates Degree in Criminal Justice from Kaplan University in January of 2017 and continues to work towards his bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice at Saint Martin’s University. He’s been awarded two Army Commendation Medals, three Army Achievement Medals and three Army Good Conduct Medals along with several Certificates of Achievement.
SSG Murdock is married to Anna Patricia Murdock. They have two girls, Jaycee Grace Murdock and Eisley Bee Murdock. He has many hobbies, but his favorite ones are those that involve his wife and kids. He enjoys going to the lake, going camping, seeing new sites around the area and taking road trips with his family.
