(OLYMPIA, Wash.) – Did you know that in over thirty incredible women have embarked on an adventure to nourish the minds of adolescent girls? Chemists, wildlife biologists, television producers, and astro-biologists are just a few of the minds involved as mentors for the YWCA’s Girls Without Limits! (GWOL!) Program.
The YWCA’s GWOL! Program is a low/no-cost weekend, spring break and summer camp program and Winter Girls Summit that encourages girls ages 10-14 to develop skills in science, technology, engineering, & math (S.T.E.M.), gain career awareness via mentorship with professional women, and foster self-esteem and leadership skills in a positive and fun learning environment. Our mentors are helping close the gender gap in S.T.E.M. achievement and careers. Through GWOL! Mentors, girls in our community have the opportunity to explore S.T.E.M. topics that they might not have known existed like astrophysics and molecular biology. By connecting girls with female professionals in the community and offering first hand experiences, participants have the chance to gain confidence in their own abilities and learn about career options in S.T.E.M. The knowledge and interest that is cultivated in GWOL! gives young women the tools they need to succeed in college and beyond.
Join the YWCA on Tuesday June 24 for an Open House to meet some of these generous women and hear how their efforts have inspired and motivated middle school-aged girls in Thurston County.
