After closing our doors nearly two years ago, Olympia Family Theater is thrilled to announce that we are reopening in spring 2022 with an exciting line-up of theatrical experiences for the entire family!
We are returning this spring with 3 special and unique offerings for our community, which are described below. Looking ahead we are planning on a full roster of summer camps in 2022, and a 5-show Mainstage season in 2022-2023. Stay tuned!
2022 SPRING LINE-UP
(1) Olympia Family Theater is launching our first Company-in-Residence program with String and Shadow: a giant puppet theater company creating heartfelt shows for all ages. Their style of puppetry includes masks, giant puppets, elaborate costumes, transforming sets and shadow puppets. Launched in 2016, String and Shadow has quickly become a beloved part of Olympia’s art scene. OFT is kicking things off in March by presenting a revival of their 2020 production,The Paper Moon, which was cancelled mid-production due to the pandemic. In our 2022-2023 season you’ll see String and Shadow puppets throughout OFT’s Mainstage season, puppetry classes for youth, and a special co-production which we will announce next spring.
“Things got very strange when the moon fell out of the sky… Of course, authorities replaced it right away, glued a flat paper circle up there where the old moon used to be. But still, people noticed when lovers did not swoon, wolves did not howl, the tides no longer pushed in and out – why the paper moon did not even wax and wane! All the artists were at a loss to come up with any good ideas without moonlit nights to guide them… There are no new songs… No poems or stories or paintings!”
So begins The Paper Moon, opening March 11, 2022!
(2) Olympia Family Theater is producing a super-secret statewide touring project that we are not at liberty to talk about quite yet! Stay tuned for announcements because something special is brewing – and has been fully funded by a mysterious benefactor.
This project will premiere at OFT on March 18, 2022!
(3) The workshop premiere of ALPHABET CAPER, a new musical written by Ted Ryle. Alphabet Caper was slated to premiere in 2020, but was cancelled due to the pandemic. We are thrilled to be able to support the final development period of this show and see its long overdue premiere at OFT. Alphabet Caper follows the story of Halona – a young girl who loves the alphabet and has formed an imaginary band – The Alphabetastics! When Halona finds out that her Mom is expecting, she turns to her best friends (letters!) to work through her emotions.
An audition posting for Alphabet Caper will go out in January, and the show will open on May 13, 2022!
HOW TO ATTEND & TICKETING
As we reopen, Olympia Family Theater is acutely aware of the social and economic toll that the pandemic has had on our community. With this in mind, we are piloting an “Access for All” ticketing initiative for both Paper Moon and the Fully Vaxxed plays. All tickets for these productions will be available on a sliding pay-what-you-can scale of $5-$35. Additionally, we will hold at least 25% of our house for day-of walk-up tickets, available on a first-come, first-served basis.. These tickets will be offered free-of-cost to the community – although you are still welcome to purchase if you are able with cash, card, or check.
It is our hope that we will be able to extend this ticketing policy to Alphabet Caper as well. To do this we ask that those in our community who can afford the cost of a full-price ticket consider purchasing at the top rate so that we can pay your generosity forward and always ensure ACCESS FOR ALL at OFT. Tickets for our Spring offerings will go on sale in mid-late January 2022. Advance ticket reservation is recommended due to limited seating! Tickets can be purchased online or by phone with Visa, MasterCard or American Express, and are available 24 hours a day from our website: http://olyft.org.
