Powerful phone language. Working with gatekeepers. Building relationships. Setting yourself apart in a simple phone call.
The art of the telephone call was the subject of the most recent YPN SMART TALK at the Hotel RL on Monday, Jan. 23.
Kevin Stahl shared a video by Ben Newman on the topic of powerful phone language. The group discussed the video and main points; using powerful phrases, making tough calls and working with gatekeepers. All agreed that some phone calls are difficult to make.
Miguel Pineda from Sidewalk shared that his team has set times that they make calls and said, “We pump up before our calls with music that gets us ready and excited.”
Dallas Roberts who works with congressman Denny Heck’s office suggested trying to “make the gatekeeper feel like they are a part of the conversation, not that you are just trying to get past them.”
Many times it’s an issue of the mindset that prevents successful calls. Many have an end goal is simply to make a sale and miss out on the relationship that is built with not only the decision maker but the whole team.
The YPN group suggests that when making calls, make sure you are in a positive mood, and make sure that what is most important in the call is building a relationship. A first call will not likely result in a sale, but building a relationship with the individual on the other end of the phone, remembering their name, is what will set a business apart from every other person who is simply calling to advance their personal needs.
Join the young professionals every Monday, starting at 12:00 in the Hotel RL dining area for our weekly SMART Talk roundtable discussions.
