Big wins for conservation funding
In the final hours of negotiating the State Capital Budget, the WA State Legislature made a strong commitment to fund conservation of Washington’s beautiful lands, waters and local parks – right in your backyard! The final budget included nearly $3million for conservation projects led by Capitol Land Trust, based in Olympia. These projects will protect and restore lands along the Black River, conserve a large cattle ranch along the Deschutes River, and expand Mason County’s Coulter Creek Park near Allyn. These projects are critical to protecting our water resources – ensuring safe and abundant water supplies for people, as well as, habitat for salmon and many rare species like the Oregon spotted-frog. Two of the projects – an acquisition near the Lake Lucinda community and the Mason County Park addition – will expand public access to hiking and non-motorized boating. Restoration work to replant native species along Black River and reengineer a culvert blocking salmon passage will provide local jobs. These funds will be provided through the Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program and the Washington Coast Restoration Initiative.
