Monday, September 19th the Thurston Chamber’s Young Professionals group met at Hotel RL where Krystal Barkis from the Chamber facilitated the SMART Talks discussion.
The topic was company culture and the discussion focused on what is important to young professionals and what makes a successful company culture.
Communication was a huge focus and as Jaron Banks from Russell Chiropractic put it “culture needs encouragement” and that it’s important to have “weekly check in meetings to become familiar with everyone”.
As I heard Jaron’s comment, I felt that common fear all employees have “I don’t want MORE meetings!” There is a common fear that meetings are about mistakes, however if more meetings take place that have positive messages, the culture and opinion of meetings changes.
This was a key take away from our SMART talk. If you get to know your employees and co-workers it’s easier to be transparent, and if there are issues they can be corrected sooner.
A call into the office to talk to “the boss” is met with enthusiasm rather than dread since there is an established culture of open communication.
Encourage your employees and employers to have more meaningful, regular, and open conversations, it might just improve your company culture!
Join us every Monday at noon at Hotel RL in the dining area to be a part of our next round table discussion.
