We believe that strong public policy creates a vibrant community. Engagement in critical public policy issues on behalf of individual members and organizations is at the core of the Chamber’s mission.
The Public Policy Division of the Thurston Chamber, in cooperation with the Shared Thurston Legislative Agenda, is pursuing three State budget requests. One of these requests is for $2.0 million for Brewing and Distilling Equipment. Funding enables the acquisition of equipment to establish a Center for Craft Brewing and Distilling. The Center will provide a regional focus on craft brewing, distilling, and cidery and provide education, research, workforce development and public information for all three rapidly growing craft industries and markets. Partners include, but are not limited to, the City of Tumwater, South Puget Sound Community College, and the Thurston Economic Development Council.
Funding for Brewing and Distilling Equipment was not included in the Senate Capital Budget and it does not currently include in the first version of the House Capital Budget. However, the community has a limited window to ask lawmakers to include an appropriation for Brewing and Distilling Equipment in the 2017-2019 budget. The House Capital Budget committee will be holding a public hearing on Thursday, April 6 on the Capital Budget. They expect to pass the capital budget out of committee on Friday, April 7. Supportive comments should be sent to the Thurston County Delegation this week and, if possible, members of the House Capital Budget Committee. It is our hope that positive community comments in favor of the Brewing and Distilling request will demonstrate enough support so that lawmakers are compelled to advocate and work to include the equipment request when the bill leaves the committee. If the request is not included in the committee’s bill, we would also like to see community support so that amendments to the budget can be made in good faith from members of our delegation on the House floor and prior to the full vote by the House of Representatives. If we are successful in getting the request into the House Capital Budget it will then be an item up for negotiation and hopefully, it will be kept in the final compromise budget.
We request that Chamber members send an email or contact members of the Thurston County legislative delegation in the House of Representatives to express your support to allocate funds for Brewing and Distilling equipment for the City of Tumwater and South Puget Sound Community College in the Capital Budget. Let them know that you believe that this a positive investment in education, jobs, and the local economy. Feel free to personalize or create your own message of support. In general, a message of support would state:
I’m contacting you to express my support for the appropriation of funds in the State Capital Budget to support the acquisition of craft brewing and distilling equipment for the City of Tumwater and South Puget Sound Community College.
As a member of the Thurston Chamber of Commerce and a member of the greater Thurston County business community, I believe that brewing and distilling equipment is a positive investment if education, jobs, and the local economy. Funding represents a meaningful step toward further diversifying our local economy and greater support for rural areas in our region. Based on recent reports, I am aware that the College, City, and Port of Olympia are making great progress toward securing private investments and collaborating to bring this unique and innovate partnership together. State support will provide resources and help successfully launch this highly visible project.
Your efforts to include funding for the craft brewing and distilling equipment in the Capital Budget are greatly appreciated. Thank you.
