A distinguished U.S. Army veteran and an accomplished musician—both honors graduates of their respective law schools—have joined the Phillips Burgess legal team.
According to an announcement made by managing partner Heather Burgess, co-founder of the South Sound/Southwest Washington law firm, Michael Kelly and Kent van Alstyne have been hired as associate attorneys “as part of Phillips Burgess’ continuing effort to expand and enhance the real estate, land use, and environmental law services we are able to provide our growing roster of clients.”
Kelly, who served two tours of duty in the Middle East prior to commencing his college studies, is a graduate of the University of Washington Tacoma and Gonzaga University School of Law. Focusing his practice principally on the transactional side of business law and real estate, Kelly has been a legal intern for Ledger Square Law, Tacoma, and a law clerk to the general counsel of Associated Industries, Spokane.
During law school, Kelly was managing editor of the Gonzaga Journal of International Law and served as Negotiation Competition chair of the Moot Court Honors Council. In the community, he has been a volunteer for Northwest Harvest and the state Department of Ecology. He works primarily out of the firm’s Olympia office.
Van Alstyne pursued his undergraduate studies at the University of Washington, where he was clarinet soloist for the UW Orchestra. He received his law degree cum laude from Lewis & Clark Law School, serving as associate editor of the Environmental Law Review.
During his law student years, the Chehalis native was a clerk for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Oregon Land Use Board of Appeals. Prior to joining Phillips Burgess, he was a staff attorney with the Pierce County Housing Justice Project. Van Alstyne will practice primarily out of the firm’s Tacoma office, focusing his practice on land use and environmental law issues.
Established in 2012 with offices in Olympia and Tacoma, Phillips Burgess is a boutique law firm specializing in real estate, land use, and environmental law. Firm attorneys, several of whom have been recognized as Super Lawyers®, Rising Stars®, and Best Lawyers in America®, offer clients an uncommon combination of large-firm experience and small-firm, personalized service.
